| ~ Our Mission ~ The Mission of the UDFCD Design and Construction Program is to steward the taxpayer's dollars by efficiently and effectively using those tax dollars to construct facilities that protect or remove structures from flooding. We will accomplish this by being the leader in innovation to protect society from flooding while working in context with existing development and in harmony with the environment. Flood control improvements along Lena Gulch continue to be of utmost importance here in Jefferson County. Worthy of acknowledgement is the 1.3 million dollar project at Orion Street, Orchard Street and West 10th Avenue, where flooding often occurs. Urban Drainage and Jefferson County have teamed up with ICON engineering to tackle this venture.A notable facet of this project, and this quarter's highlight is the crossing at Orion Street. The picture above shows a 5'x13' box culvert, which replaced the pre-existing 6o" corrugated metal pipe. Edge Contracting has been awarded the contract for the full project, and has subbed out Bear Retaining Walls to construct the Redi-Rock retaining walls (also shown above). Redi-Rock adds a nice touch of aesthetics and this design will certainly provide the required stability that the previous failed concrete wall did not. The combination of the newly installed Redi-Rock wall and box culvert will contain flows up to a 10-year storm event, so feel free to drive down Orion Street without fear of hydroplaning or floating away!
